If you are anything like me, you often feel overwhelmed by all of the choices you have to make in order to run your practice.
You're bombarded with so many options and opportunities - What practice niche to focus on? Who should your target market be?
What marketing strategy? Which marketing consultant? Which software program? What document system? Paperless or not? Maintenance program or not? Funding or not?
Employees or not? Which programs should you take? What areas should you focus on? Which practice model? Which vendors?
So, how does the smart business owner make the best decisions?
#1: Determine your goals and make sure they are really your goals.
Block time off on your calendar right now to contemplate what's really important to you. And, make sure that your goals are your own. If you are a mom with young children, your goals are going to be different than the goals of a 55 year old with an empty nest whose goals are going to differ from a 72 year old with a long practice behind him. Consider what's really important to you - not the people around you.
#2: Consider each option and opportunity within the context of your goals.
Look at each opportunity that is presented to you and really consider whether it will further your goals or whether it will take time away from your goals. As you can see, if you haven't spent time really identifying what's important to you, making a decision can be mighty difficult.
#3: Find a teacher you really respect and learn from them.
Once you've identified what's important to you, look around and identify people who have accomplished what you want to accomplish and then find every opportunity you can to learn from them. Learning from other people's experiences is one of the best ways I know to save hundreds of hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Of course, you want to make sure you are learning from people who have actually done what you want to do or been where you are.
I've made the mistake in the past of trying to learn from someone who hasn't walked the path I'm on and it doesn't work. And, many times, I've taken the hard road and instead of learning from someone else, decided to try it myself and boy have some of those decisions cost me a lot of time, money and heartache. I learned what I needed to learn, but it was a tough experience.
The most important thing to realize is that you are not alone in this. When you feel overwhelmed by the choices, take a deep breath, remember that it's okay to reach out for help and then do so.
