In just a couple of hours, my mom, stepmom and grandma will arrive from Miami to spend some time with me and the kids.
Yes, you read that right. My mom AND my stepmom.
Ever since my dad's death a couple of years ago, my mom and stepmom hang out quite frequently.
It's not that weird if you think about it. They both loved my dad a whole lot - my stepmom probably LIKED my dad a lot more than my mom, but they both loved him.
My stepmom and my dad only had five years together before his death, but I'd venture to say those five years were my dad's happiest.
I get a little sad thinking that he had to wait until his mid-50s to find the love of his life, but I also realize he wasn't ready before then.
Even if he had met her before, he wouldn't have been in a position to receive her into his life.
He spent years and years married to mom in an unhappy relationship because he felt he had an obligation to her and he was afraid to follow his heart.
I'm choosing to do things differently in my life.
